Rei Stood there. Standing stiffly in that small doctor's office. She stared forward at the X-ray in front of her. The words of the quirkologist were muffled in her ears...

"I've never seen anything like it before... It's like his body is split in half! It truly is fascinating. Even the skin seems to be just slightly different on one side." He babbled on. He seemed to be very excited and intrigued by her son's anatomy.

He didn't understand.

"His right side has already proven to be able to produce heat! But even the skin is different, seems to be more tolerant to the heat. Like your husband while his other side does seem more inclined to the cold. But it's also completely quirkless."

Quirkless.

How was that possible? Rei stared straight forward. Not seeing the doctor or the X-rays. Her eyes were wide and devoid of any life.

The doctor kept talking, pointing at the X-rays of her son's feet. One side had a pinkie toe with a different build up. A common quirkless trait. Half of him... Was quirkless?

What they thought was "half cold half hot" was actually... Just heat.

"It shouldn't affect his quirk much though. As long as he's careful not to overheat his other side he should be able to use it safely! He could probably eventually reach pro level. Though with his left side it's unlikely he'll be stronger than his father."

No...

Rei stared, her breathing was unsteady. Was she even breathing? She didn't know.

She failed. Again.

This was the fourth time she's heard this news from enthusiastic doctors. Her children were good... But not good ENOUGH.

Not enough.

She was never enough. Never.

Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never
Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never

Every child was a failure. Every pregnancy wasn't worth it to him. He wanted more... He wanted Better... Stronger.

Shoto wasn't strong enough.

When he was born and they saw his hair... When he started producing heat at three... They thought he was it.

Rei thought he'd be the child to save her. Finally she was done.

Pregnancy after pregnancy.

Child after child.

She thought Shoto was it. That he'd be her last. That he'd be the perfect son endeavor was so set on getting. That he'd save her from the cycle. That he'd be the miracle both his parents needed.

Her grip on the boy's hand tightened as she realized again what was in store for her.

Endeavor would want to try again. He always wanted to try again. It didn't matter what she wanted. He wanted the perfect child. An heir with an all powerful quirk capable of dominating the hero world and surpassing All might himself.

It didn't matter what she wanted. Though he never said it in plain words it was clear that she was on this earth for one purpose.

Creating the perfect hero for him.

But she couldn't. He has been wrong to choose her as his wife. She couldn't do it. She COULDN'T do it.

She couldn't go through another pregnancy again. Shoto had been so hard on her, and she was seven years older now. She couldn't even imagine the difficulties she would have, the possible miscarriages. The complications of childbirth.

The likelihood of another failure.

Rei loved her kids with all her heart. They were the only people she knew truly loved her. The only reason she hadn't ended it all years ago. Each pregnancy was hard but she didn't regret them.

But that didn't mean she wanted to go through it again.

"...Mom?"

Rei looked down eyes still wide. Her body was trembling as Shoto stared up at her without expression. She briefly considered what this must be like for him.

If her purpose was bearing the perfect child.

His purpose was to BE that child.

His father had already begun training him. Shoto was pushed past his limits even at the age of seven. He understood what his father wanted and looking into her eyes... It was clear he understood what was wrong as well.

That he wasn't strong enough.

"We have to go." Rei bowed to the doctor suddenly. Rushing out the door with her hand still clutching Shoto's. She pulled him out too quick for his to keep up. Tripping, stumbling and running. Rei turned a corner and almost bumped into a nurse.

The woman looked scared at first then smiled at Rei. Who didn't even seem to notice the fact that she was holding a sleeping little girl in her arms.

She was around Shoto's age and completely unconscious.

"Kira?-" Shoto mumbled before his mom started to pull him towards the door.

"She just fell asleep. I'm taking her to a comfortable place to rest until her mommy gets here." The nurse explained. But there was something off about her expression. Something that would have bothered Rei if she had been in her right mind.

"Come on Shoto!" Rei snapped. Her trembling voice barely above a whisper.

Shoto let her drag him, eyes staying on the little girl as the nurse carried her out.

"Listen to me Shoto." Rei whispered, taking off his coat as they entered the house. She whispered, even though her husband wasn't home. "Don't tell your father about what the doctor said today alright? Let Mommy handle it o-okay?"

Shoto stared at her. She understood he didn't show emotions quite like her other kids did. She assumed it was because of how Enji treated him... Like a soldier.

"Yes ma'am..." He whispered. Looking at her. "Is he... Is he going to be mad at you... Because of me?"

"No..." Rei put her hands on his shoulders. "No baby it's not your fault."

"Rei."

She froze in the kitchen as she heard heavy footsteps enter the room. Her husband.

"Oh Enji... Y-you're home." She whispered, her hands shook as she wiped off a dish.

"Did you take Shoto to the doctor?" He asked. Rei couldn't see him, staring into the bubbly water of the sink.

"Yes..." She whispered. She felt like throwing up, crying or screaming. She knew she had to tell him. He'd figure it out anyways, keeping secrets would get her nothing but trouble in the long run.

The long run... But at this point... What was it a run too?

Her life felt like an endless race, one without end or prize for her. She was just running. For no reason, towards nothing. Her life had no purpose other than this. Something she failed at over and over.

"Did he say if there was any change? His quirk is taking a disturbingly long time to develop all the way. All the others had their full potential at five." The man said stepping closer.

Rei was shaking, hands on the side of the sink. Her breathing ragged. She prayed he wouldn't notice. "...No." she whispered. It sounded like a whimper. "No he didn't say anything... Just that... That we'll have to wait."

She lied. The truth on the top of her tongue, but she swallowed it down. Her instincts to preserve herself winning out in the end.

"...I'll see about finding a more competent professional." Her husband said with a frown. He seemed displeased, but he also seemed to buy into her lie.

He stepped forward, standing directly behind her. She could now see his reflection in the water of the sink. His blue eyes were practically glowing as he met hers in the water. "I think we should start considering an alternative. In case we're... Disappointed again."

She didn't understand why he said 'we' and 'we're' as though Rei also had a choice. As though they were equal partners.

She didn't say anything, standing with that same empty look in her eyes.

"Perhaps we should try tonight." He sat a large hand on her shoulder. Face stone cold as her suggested trying for another child.
Tonight.

His voice held no love. No romance. No affection for his wife. He acted as though he was simply doing a job. Something that was necessary and not even for pleasure.

She shook her head. That same lying instinct creeping in.

"No..." She coughed and he raised an eyebrow at her refusal. But she didn't have the guts to actually oppose him. "No I'm not at the proper... Time in my cycle." She whispered, coming up with the first excuse she could to avoid him tonight. "I'm menstruating. We should wait a week or so. When it's more likely."

Her suggestion was meek. But logical to him. He removed his hand and she was finally able to breath again.

"Very well."

The pills sat in her hand. She stared at them blankly, sitting in her personal bedroom.

There were twenty of them. Twenty pills from the strongest medication she could find in their cabinets. The dose ten times the amount suggested in the warning label.

She wondered if it would be enough. She never thought about how to do this. It seemed like this would be the easiest option and if it failed then she'd know it wasn't meant to be.

She just wanted to drop out of this pointless race. She wasn't going to win anyways, might as well forfeit it. She just couldn't imagine putting herself through the same thing for yet another time. Not again.

She was ready. Leaving a note from the doctor on her bed, she felt guilty about telling Enji about Shoto. Even now. But she hoped  he'd let him alone after he found out. Let him be around his siblings. Let him be normal.

Rei looked at them and considered how she should do it. Should she take them one at a time? Or as many as possible? With water? Her stomach was empty. Would that mean it would happen soon?

She just wanted to lay down and fall asleep. Praying she won't wake up in this same reality.

Her phone rang.

She looked over at it. Staring at the random number on the screen.

She never got calls. Not even spam calls.

She only communicated with her family and with endeavor. Her curiosity peeked slightly and something in her begged her to pick it up.

"Is this Rei Todoroki?" The vaguely familiar voice of a man asked as she put the phone to her ear. It was a doctor she met once or twice at Shoto's appointments. Not the man who gave them the news.

"Y-yes." Her voice shook.

"I've heard of you and your son's predicament."

Her eyes widened as she waited for him to speak again.

"I'm calling to offer you a solution."

Endeavor wouldn't notice if Rei was quirkless. Especially not if Shoto miraculously developed the cold part of his quirk.

One of the doctors at Shoto's office gave her the contact of a man with the ability to take and give any quirk he wanted.

All for one.

Rei kneeled. Shoto trembled.

He didn't understand what was going on. His mother told him that he would get an ice quirk Today. But he didn't know exactly how.

Now he sat on his knees infront of a man with no face. Who smiled at them both, sitting in a chair, looming over them.

Shoto had always thought his father was the most terrifying person ever. Now he saw how wrong he was.

This man radiated pure power. Sitting like a god as he looked at them. Though Shoto couldn't see his eyes he knew the man was staring into his soul.

"I have no problem blessing the both of you. But I won't do it for nothing in return." The man spoke. Sounding like no one Shoto had ever heard before. He bowed farther down, crying in fear.

"Of course sir." Rei whispered.

"I want you to swear. That if I ever need anything, you'll be willing to lend me favors in return for this gift." He said. Offering something they couldn't refuse.

"Yes sir. I swear it." Rei whispered.

"No Mrs Todoroki. The one I want to swear is your son." The man corrected. He had no use for the quirkless wife of endeavor.

Shoto on the other hand. Could be very useful.

Shoto looked at his mother. Asking with his teary eyes if he should swear to him as she was willing to do. She looked back. She didn't know what would happen to him because of this decision. She didn't care in this moment either.

She nodded at him. Eyes pleading.

Shoto looked up at the man who wore a huge uncanny smile and wiped his tears.

"I swear."

Rei almost collapsed in relief as the man lifted his hands, prepared to use his quirk on both of them. She didn't realize what she was doing. She didn't realize that for her own safety...

She had just sold her son to the devil.
